Abstract:
The Devonian reef complex at Layao of Guangxi was developed on the edge of Weining-Dushan carbonate platform. It was composed of superimposed reefs and deposits of banks and platforms. Five main communities occurred in the reef complex and represented respectively five different kinds of depositional environments. Among these, the Stromatopora-Alveolites community, dominated by stromatoporoids, was very important for reef-building. Five communities occupied regularly the different positions in the reef complex. The vertical distribution of the communities in the section indicates that the process of reef developing can be divided into three cycles, which include nine secondary cycles. The cycles reflect the variations of the sea water depth.
