Abstract:
Collected from the coastal area (tidal flat) of the North Jiangsu Banks (NOJIB) on the inner shelf of the Southwestern Yellow Sea,34 surface sediment samples were quantitatively analysed. The results show that the foraminiferal taphocoenoses are mixtures of indigenous and allochthonous compositions. These taphocoenoses are high in diversity, strongly variable in abundance, small in test size, rich in planktonic forms and common in mechanical destruction (test abrasion and brokenness). All these features are related to the tidal transport processes which are the dominant hydrodynamic conditions in the study area.During the transportation and deposition, the foraminiferas are well sorted, mixed and destructed. Therefore, these foraminiferal taphocoenoses studied are combined products of ecological and taphonomic factors.
